New web strategy and improved provision of information with TYPO3

About FIZ Karlsruhe

Based in Karlsruhe, FIZ Karlsruhe is one of 89 institutes that make up the Leibniz Association. Specialised in information infrastructure, and with more than 340 employees, it is the biggest non-university institute of its kind in Germany.

As a non-profit limited company, the purpose of FIZ Karlsruhe is to provide the science, business and industrial sectors with reliable, well-founded research and patent information. The institute even develops its own research methods, such as specialised semantic search engines and text-mining tools. It also provides services and offers clients in the public and industrial sectors support with information structuring. Clients include large companies from the pharmaceutical and chemical industry.

TYPO3-based technical implementation of the new website

The information provided by FIZ Karlsruhe has been visually arranged so that it is easily accessible for all types of user. To do this, we identified the different user types and designed the website accordingly. Based on this concept, we designed different access routes to the information and implemented these in an attractive and highly functional screen design. The overall look has also been adapted to FIZ Karlsruhe’s corporate design.

For the technical implementation of the concept, we opted for open-source CMS TYPO3, version 6.2 LTS. The CMS meets numerous requirements for an accessible and responsive website. Different databases for different language versions can also be created and used in a structured way. By optimising the source code, we reduced the amount of data that needs to be loaded before using the website. As a result, the new FIZ Karlsruhe website is now even quick to load with a mobile data connection.

The solution

Since the relaunch, visitors experience a visually tidy, modern and intuitive website that can easily be used on any end device. Thanks to large, touchscreen-compatible menus, the FIZ website is user-friendly for tablet and smartphone users too.

Specialist visitors can access the information they need directly through quick links, while other users can find extensive information about the individual areas. The central menu provides immediate access to content from all sub-pages. The entire website was created and tested in accordance with the “Web Content Accessibility Guidelines” (WCAG 2.0) and the “Barrierefreie Informationstechnik-Verordnung” (BITV 2.0) (Accessible Information Technology Regulation). As a result, the entire FIZ Karlsruhe website is accessible to users with disabilities.
